On paper scrolls, the sentences “Colonialism is a glitch in time. Imperialism is a glitch in time. All forms of supremacy culture are glitches in time” speak to the dysfunction & impermanence of colonial & oppressive technologies. They may feel permanent, yet must not be for life to continue. This piece is at once a truth, prayer, imperative, reclamation, & protest. In the spirit of restorative alchemy, the English language is turned in on itself to awaken memories that it was used to erase. The same intentions are realized by engaging a space built for consumerism. Reclaiming how we relate to time/space, and discerning how systems of oppression distort these relationships, are part of the revolution. Recognizing colonialism as a glitch or blip in time can give us the fuel to continue liberation work even though we might not experience the results in our lifetime. What would it mean to liberate ourselves from short term thinking into caring, cyclic, relational, generational, and expansive temporalities? More writing on these themes will be available in a zine. Graphic design support is by Saish Kotecha, using Tré Seals’s Vocal typefaces, which are inspired by W.E.B. Du Bois’s civil rights infographics, and the protest signs of the 1970 National Chicano Moratorium Against The Vietnam War.
