Colonialism is a glitch in time

Vital Spaces at the Fashion Outlets
8380 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507

On view Mon-Sat 10am-7pm, Sun 10am-6pm (Mall hours)

On paper scrolls, the sentences “Colonialism is a glitch in time. Imperialism is a glitch in time. All forms of supremacy culture are glitches in time” speak to the dysfunction & impermanence of colonial & oppressive technologies. They may feel permanent, yet must not be for life to continue. This piece is at once a truth, prayer, imperative, reclamation, & protest. In the spirit of restorative alchemy, the English language is turned in on itself to awaken memories that it was used to erase. The same intentions are realized by engaging a space built for consumerism.

ICE CROP

Vital Spaces at the Fashion Outlets
8380 Cerrillos Rd, Santa Fe, NM 87507

On view Mon-Sat 10am-7pm, Sun 10am-6pm (Mall hours)

Ice Crop is a collection of sculptures modeled on historic 19th century ice harvesting tools. In New Mexico the ice industry was centered in Las Vegas, but with the advent of manufactured refrigeration at the turn of the century, ice harvesting became obsolete, and meanwhile sediment deposits in local ponds made them too shallow to freeze in winter. The exhibition includes a video filmed near Las Vegas where the sculptures, cast in materials including wax and unfired clay, encounter the contemporary landscape.

Tendonitis, by Osiel Gonzalez

The painterly and sculptural objects presented, as well as an architectural structure, challenge what can be done with recycled materials like discarded lumber, plywood, or plastic debris. In addition to confronting the issue of waste, the exhibition also unlocks new ways of perceiving everyday objects and materials.

Phase Change Closing Reception

Phase Change Closing Reception

Throughout June and July 2021 Amanda Lechner has been working on a new body of experimental buon fresco (paintings made by brushing liquid pigment into wet lime plaster) in a studio on the Santa Fe “mid-town campus” though the Vital Spaces Organization. Over this span Lechner is hosting several visiting artists from New Mexico and across the U.S. The resulting fresco works on repurposed styrofoam, tile, fabric and stone are part of an evolving exhibition installed in the studio/exhibition space. Phase Change doubles as a solo show of Lechner’s work and as a group/collaborative exhibition. This project is a catalyst for creative connection after a year of collective isolation. It is also an experiment in creating educational space as site for conversation and collaboration.
